 How I Stay Sane When Life Gets Messy

Firstly, what is optimism?

Most people call it positive thinking. But for me, it’s more than that. It’s the small spark that keeps you going when life feels heavy, messy, and completely out of control.

Optimism is the ability to look at the brighter side even when everything around feels dark. It’s an art—maybe even a talent—and not all of us are born with it.

There are phases in life when we’re at our most vulnerable. Nothing seems to go right. Every plan we carefully made starts falling apart. In those moments, even breathing feels heavy. Yet somehow, that one optimistic thought about the situation makes the weight feel a little lighter.

For me, optimism has always been a way to escape—to run from phases that were never part of my planned road. Call me delusional if you want, but I call it optimism.

I choose to think of all the positive outcomes a situation could lead to. This is how I try to see the silver lining:

If I score less on something, I tell myself, “At least I didn’t fail.”

If I lose something I love, I remind myself, “At least I had something I loved so deeply.”

If I don’t get along with someone very close to me, I think, “At least I got the chance to be that close and feel that love.”

Even if nothing else changes, these small thoughts act like a shield. They stop me from falling too deep into sadness. And I always hold on to one belief:

Whatever happens, happens for a reason—or for good.

Sometimes, my optimism feels like a bubble around me—shielding me and distancing me from harsh reality. But what’s wrong with that, if it makes me happier and less grumpy about life?

AFTER ALL, WHAT’S THE POINT OF HAVING A LIFE IF WE SPEND IT CONSTANTLY BEING SAD INSTEAD OF CHOOSING HAPPINESS WHEREVER WE CAN?

Optimism may not change reality—but it changes how we live in it. And sometimes, that small shift makes all the difference.
